Icons are not really just a decorative item in the world of design; they’re a very important item in the world of design. They can really enhance and improve the quality of the user experience. Let’s dive in and learn how icons can serve us:

Icon Recognition

Icons are one thing that all people universally agree about. They’re quickly recognizable, making it easy to navigate through apps without a lot of text, embracing minimalism. A common example is the icon of a trash can that we use to delete emails. All people instantly know what it is for because of its widespread use.

Icons can also be a great tool to guide users through sites or apps. An example of this is a well-placed home icon that gives the user a quick and constant anchor to return to the main page without getting confused.

Consistency in Design

What makes consistency in using icons so important in design is that it allows users to get used to the environment of the app they’re using, making it a comfortable space for them.

Matching Icons with the Brand

What I consider one of the most essential rules when using icons, especially in UI design, is matching them with the brand guidelines and tone. As we know, icons can vary in colors, corner radius, the way they’re drawn, etc. Icons need to reflect the brand’s personality. A corporate app might use sleek, minimal icons. Respecting that can make the experience better.

Two Things to Avoid When Working with Icons

First is using uncommon icons. Icons need to be universally understood. We need to avoid using abstract icons that need explaining.

Second is overusing icons. Too many icons can be overwhelming to users. In addition, it can make the interface cluttered. Use icons only when they add a real value to the design or guide the users to important actions.

Examples of Popular Use of Icons

Let’s see real-life examples of icons used in different fields. Social media, for example, is the most popular thing that humans spend a large amount of time on. When we like the content of some reel or some post, we use the like button on platforms like Facebook or Instagram. These types of icons have become so recognizable that we don’t even need a label to understand them.

So, in summary, icons are a great tool that makes interfaces more simple and enhances navigability. They can be a game-changer when used correctly.
